Real stories of career mobility at Capital One
Afua stepped into her first role out of college with a clear mission: to listen and learn. She first joined Capital One as a customer service associate, where she talked to customers on the phone every day. She knew she wouldn’t be in that role forever but as she was just starting out, it provided customer exposure and laid the foundation for a meaningful career at Capital One.
"I made such important connections around the company as a customer care associate," Afua said. “I started helping people wherever I could, getting to know people and networking.”
In a culture engineered for internal mobility, Afua’s curiosity was met with a clear path forward. She discovered a passion for tech and found that Capital One didn’t just allow her to pivot, it provided the infrastructure to make it happen. By earning PMP and AWS certifications through internal courses and co-leading a peer mentorship program, she turned her customer-facing background into a technical springboard, navigating a series of strategic moves that allowed her to apply her new expertise across diverse corners of the business.
Today, she serves as a project management lead for the Machine Learning Experience team’s Chief of Staff, helping drive the adoption and integration of responsible, scalable AI across Capital One.

Monica: Using transferable skills to pivot internally
Like Afua, Monica’s career path has been defined by a willingness to learn new things and try something different. She first joined the Boston office as a lead for the Students & Grads organization, where she discovered a deep passion for unlocking the potential of others. She found her stride in helping students navigate their early careers and empowering them to show up as the best versions of themselves.
To become a well-rounded leader, she wanted a deeper look at how the whole company fits together. When she was ready for a change, she found her next big opportunity right where she was, rather than looking elsewhere. She relied on her internal network and transferable skills to pivot into a compensation role within HR. Despite having limited prior exposure to the world of pay structures and incentive plans, the organization gave her the runway to learn the work from the ground up.
That move kicked off a series of strategic internal pivots. She continued to drive her own growth by securing a role in Finance Tech, where she intentionally layered technical expertise onto her people-centric background.
Today, Monica’s diverse experience has culminated in her current Chief of Staff role. Working closely with leadership, Monica now oversees career growth, recognition and learning—a position that feels like the perfect fit.
Throughout these internal moves, she points to leadership support as the constant factor in her success. “It means everything to me to have leaders who are so invested in my growth,” she said. “Having that culture of support—whether it’s their mentorship or whether they’re in a room advocating for me in front of their peers—has made all of the difference in my career.”

Josh: How on-the-job learning fuels career opportunities
When Josh joined Capital One after studying business and marketing, he faced a rapid learning curve in his role as a commercial credit analyst. But he was able to find his footing because of a supportive and accessible environment where associates can freely ask questions.
“When I first joined, I was absorbing a massive amount of information, but I quickly realized how open and willing everyone was to help,” Josh said. “People truly took the time to ensure I wasn't just hearing the concepts, but actually understanding them.”
Josh saw firsthand how a spirit of cross-team collaboration defines the work itself, and how it leads to exposure to other parts of the business. In his current role as a business analyst, he operates at the intersection of finance and strategy, conducting deep-dive business interviews with clients to analyze revenue streams and projections as well as making credit recommendations.
The trajectory of Josh’s career shows that at Capital One, your path is never fixed. His transition into high-level credit analysis underscores the idea that your background is simply a foundation.
“Capital One values the person more than the background," Josh says. “If you have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, they’ll provide the tools and the autonomy you need to truly own your trajectory.”

Rita: How Capital One leaders prioritize internal growth
For leaders like Rita, a process management director, internal mobility is more than a policy—it’s a personal mission. Having grown up in a household where “corporate America” felt like a distant world, Rita understands how life-changing a single professional break can be.
“I have a soft spot in my heart for people who may not normally get those opportunities,” she said. “Lifting others up is really important to me.”
This passion for internal growth and mobility is what fuels the Customer-Facing Associate Mobility (CFAM) program. CFAM serves as a formal bridge for associates in frontline roles, like Afua, to transition into new career paths across other parts of the organization like Finance, Legal, HR and Tech. By blending one-on-one career coaching with hands-on technical training, the program provides the visibility Rita believes is essential for long-term success.
Rita has seen this transformation firsthand, hosting CFAM associates who arrived with little experience in her field but graduated as mentors for the next class. For her, true leadership is about providing that initial visibility—using her own network and hands-on coaching to help others forge paths they once thought were out of reach. “I love developing talent,” she said. “I'm at the point in my career where I get the most enjoyment from it.”

Navigating your own path forward
Whether you’re moving from a café role into a tech role or from recruiting into finance, the support systems are in place to help you succeed. Capital One provides the tools, support and a culture of mobility, regardless of where you start.
Josh found this to be true throughout his own journey: “There are so many different avenues if you want to branch out and try something different.”
