Distinguished Engineers: Creating a tech-first career

When most people think of “moving up” in their careers, they picture a traditional ladder where growth automatically leads to people management. At Capital One, we built a different track for high-performing tech professionals: Distinguished Engineers. It’s a role that redefines what it means to lead, shifting the focus from managing headcounts to engineering systems.

“We aren’t leading teams from a hierarchy,” says Sri Chadalavada, Vice President and Executive Distinguished Engineer. “We lead from a strategic and technical perspective to deliver something that actually makes a difference. We are leaders—we just don’t manage people.”

For Sri and the rest of our Distinguished Engineer community, the path forward is about turning complex challenges into enterprise-wide change. Discover how you can reach the highest levels of leadership by staying exactly where you thrive: at the center of the technology.

What is a Distinguished Engineer?

A Distinguished Engineer is a visionary, a role model and a problem solver. From mobile experts to infrastructure designers, our Distinguished Engineers are the architects of highly scalable systems that improve the lives of millions of customers. They don't just follow best practices—they define them by:

  • Setting engineering practices and influencing their adoption across the company
  • Bridging the gap between business, product and tech goals
  • Mentoring the next generation of talent, ensuring our technical expertise remains world-class

A community built on connection and fueled by growth

Distinguished Engineers are part of a tight-knit community where technologists help one another in deepening their expertise. Whether through dedicated Slack channels for real-time troubleshooting or monthly get-togethers where associates showcase current projects, the support is constant. This collaborative environment ensures that when one engineer grows, the entire community rises.

“It’s a very close-knit community,” says Jaime, a senior Distinguished Engineer. “When somebody asks me a question I don’t have an answer for, I ask other Distinguished Engineers. Within minutes, I have a valid answer.”

This collaborative spirit naturally fuels a culture of mentorship. Distinguished Engineers act as the ultimate role models, investing their time to sharpen the skills of junior associates and ensuring the entire engineering community levels up together. For Jaime, that means opening doors to major projects for engineers who are ready to dive in.

“I once recruited a new engineer for a mobile project who told me, ‘I have never coded on a mobile device, but I’m willing to learn,’” Jaime says. “I get to pay forward the experience that I have acquired.”

By blending formal mentorship programs with informal coaching relationships, Distinguished Engineers help associates sharpen both the technical and soft skills needed to grow their careers. It’s an environment that encourages you to be bold, question assumptions and grow authentically while helping others do the same.

Create your path forward as a specialist

The Distinguished Engineer path at Capital One proves that you don't have to choose between technical passion and senior leadership. It’s a flexible, high-influence journey that encourages you to grow authentically. Best of all? It’s fluid. You can transition into—and back out of—people management roles, ensuring you always own your professional direction.

At Capital One, you won’t just follow a career path—you’ll build the one that only you can lead. Discover how you can influence the future of tech at Capital One as a Distinguished Engineer.
