A tech career built on teamwork and growth
Devo still remembers his first week at Capital One in 2019. He had just joined as a senior manager in software engineering and was immediately pulled into an important meeting about fraud detection.
"There were about a dozen of us in the room," he said. The team worked across software engineering and product management to design a tool that could move as fast as a millisecond, without ever losing sight of the people behind the data.
The energy of a team coming together around a high-stakes, human-centered tech challenge stuck with him. That first experience set the tone for how he’d grow into a tech leader, now director of software engineering, at Capital One.
Leading with curiosity and clarity
Devo spends just as much time empowering others as he does solving problems himself. His leadership style is rooted in curiosity and simplicity.
“Ask a lot of questions,” he said. “Don’t make assumptions. We often think complex solutions are better. But sometimes the simplest answer is the most powerful.”
That mindset shapes the team culture that he fosters. Everyone’s ideas are welcome, whether they’re a new hire or a seasoned engineer, and that includes ideas for building innovative tools using tech like gen AI.
“If you have an idea,” he said, “there’s space for you at Capital One to lead the change.”
“Every line of code had the potential to impact millions of customers,” Devo said. “It was a reminder that even the smallest decisions in tech can ripple out into real lives.”
Growth beyond the code
While Devo came to Capital One for the tech and emphasis on data, he stayed for the career growth. Capital One has supported his development through leadership courses, conferences and the communities fostered within our Business Resource Groups.
One course in particular, about having candid but kind conversations, stuck with him.
“It taught me how to bring up difficult topics in a way that’s clear and empathetic,” he said. “That kind of communication builds trust. And trust builds great teams.”
It’s the combo of career growth and customer impact that keeps him inspired. He’s felt like he’s grown more at Capital One in a few years than he did in a decade elsewhere.
Flexibility that supports real life
As a parent, Devo knows that life doesn’t pause for work, and vice versa. “There are days I need to be at home for school drop-offs or doctor’s appointments,” he said. “Capital One gives me the space to be present for my family and still do great work.”
Whether it’s collaborating in person with colleagues to build innovative tech solutions or leveraging our hybrid work model for flexibility when needed, Devo appreciates being able to thrive as both a technologist and a dad.
“We say it takes a village. For me, Capital One is part of that village.”
Jumping into work that matters
Today, Devo is driving major work on two fronts: leading experience testing for a huge integration and mapping out the tech strategy to integrate a new line of business into Capital One. His mission with testing is simple: make every customer engagement with our cards perfect. To do that, he's constantly pushing to incorporate more automation.
His teams are building powerful, first-of-its-kind automation that fully exercises the customer journey. This effort dramatically boosts the quality and reliability of the daily products our customers rely on.
“Whether it’s writing code or shaping strategy, what we do here at Capital One matters,” he said. “We’re not just building tools, we’re building trust and better experiences for millions of customers.”
