When associates Alfy and Hong saw their faces in a national ad campaign for Capital One, it was more than just a career highlight. It was a moment to reflect on the meaningful, high-impact work they'd built with their teams. To have that work celebrated in such a public way? That was just the cherry on top. 

"My friends didn’t even know I was going to be in the ad," Hong laughed. "They just saw it and started messaging me."

The campaign featured real technologists like Alfy and Hong, providing a glimpse behind the scenes at the teamwork and cutting-edge solutions that power our work.

Real-time recommendations, real human impact

Hong appreciated the chance to show what working in tech really looks like at Capital One. “Technologists usually work behind the scenes, and people don’t always see what we do,” he said. “That’s why this campaign felt so meaningful—it showed the work that represents us.”

As a manager of data science, Hong led the development of a real-time system that helps personalize experiences for customers across our website and mobile app. His team approached the challenge head-on, rethinking how the entire system worked and expanding the ability to deliver faster, smarter recommendations for our customers such as bill pay alerts, enrollment into credit monitoring systems and more.

“We’re talking about thousands of transactions per second,” Hong said. “To make that work, every piece of the system, from collecting the data to producing insights, has to execute in under a second.”

Collaboration across teams, a bold product vision and leadership support turned ambition to improve customer experiences into a reality. 

Empowering people through AI

For Alfy, a director of data science, the project that was featured in the campaign is a proprietary gen AI tool built to service Capital One’s customer care agents by helping them get access to information to resolve customer questions more quickly and efficiently.

“Helping our customers starts with helping our agents,” Alfy said. “This tool gives them relevant, model-generated information in real time, so they can respond to customers faster and more accurately.”

Alfy and her team partnered closely with product and engineering teams to build, test and iterate the tool which is currently used by more than 20,000 agents who serve customers. Alfy and her team fine-tuned and customized large language models using proprietary data and helped build the architecture and platforms that now power other gen AI use cases. 

Alfy appreciates the recognition for her work. Her consistent focus on delivering impactful results since joining Capital One has led to empowering career moments, such as presenting at global AI conferences and being featured in the national campaign.

“I deeply appreciate the recognition,” she said. “It’s a powerful validation of the investment and trust that Capital One leadership places in associates like me to drive success.”

A project that leads to a proud moment

Both Alfy and Hong describe their campaign experiences as deeply motivating. What stands out most for both associates is the opportunity to represent Capital One Technology and the teams behind the scenes making a real difference. 

“When a customer logs into the app and gets a recommendation instantly—that’s our work,” Hong said. “It is exciting to have that recognized publicly.”

Alfy agrees. “So much of this work is collaborative. None of it happens in a vacuum. The ad wasn’t just about me, it was about the ecosystem we’ve built here for technologists.”
