Finding a love for teamwork in machine learning
This story is part of an ongoing series in which we highlight graduates of Capital One’s Machine Learning Engineering Training Program (MLETP), a 160-hour program that teaches software and data engineers the skills necessary to work in machine learning and AI. Learn more about MLETP.Maryam’s first year as a principal data engineer exceeded her expectations. She handled big data and helped improve the card-loss forecasting process.
Putting her existing abilities to good use while continuing to grow was important to Maryam. Within her first year, she was able to develop new skills by joining MLETP. As she got to know associates from across the company, Maryam also picked up collaboration, communication, team building and knowledge-sharing skills.
The combination of technical proficiencies and these career-advancing skills are crucial for MLETP participants’ long-term success.
“We’re working in a field where new technologies are needed to respond to challenges, so it’s crucial to learn and develop new skills,” Maryam said. “I was able to hear about the different kinds of machine learning problems from experts across the company, the problems they’re focusing on and the solutions they’re building.”
Through MLETP, Maryam attended meet and greets with machine learning experts to ask about their work and receive help on her projects in the program. She met with other participants to talk about assignments, share machine learning resources and support each other.
Maryam shared MLETP reflects the larger culture at Capital One, which focuses on career growth, teamwork and diversity, inclusion and belonging.
“This program has everything you could want,” Maryam said. “If you are looking for a great program to advance your career and skill sets, obtain hands-on machine learning experiences and get to know and network with other people in Capital One, this is the right program for you.”
