Why Emiliano chose Capital One Mexico City
As a kid growing up in Mexico, Emiliano would tag along with his dad to tech events. His father, a telecommunications engineer, often brought him to conferences in Mexico City. It was there, surrounded by screens and gadgets, that Emiliano first felt the spark that would ultimately lead him to pursue a career as a software engineer.
Today, Emiliano helps build and evolve Capital One’s cloud infrastructure, a space he first explored back in college. Before joining Capital One Mexico City, he dabbled in the cloud for school projects and at a small business he used to work at.
Now at Capital One, the scale is different: his work impacts around 100 million customers.
From skeptic to innovator
When Emiliano first saw the job listing for Capital One, he was a little skeptical about working at a bank.
But when he visited Capital One's Mexico City office during an open house, he once again felt the spark of excitement surrounding his passion for tech. He soon realized Capital One felt more like a tech company than a traditional bank because of our modern tech-stack, cloud-based infrastructure and focus on innovation.
Since joining, the engineering team in Mexico City has grown from about 28 to nearly 300 technologists, with every team member having a voice.
“I never thought I would be working at a bank, honestly,” Emiliano said. “Most banks in Mexico don't feel like the right place for engineers to do innovative work, but Capital One is different.”
More perspectives, better tech
Capital One’s Mexico City tech hub already feels like home to Emiliano because of who he builds with: software engineers and product managers who come from across Mexico and Latin America.
“Even though we share the same language, we come from very different cultures,” he said. At an office birthday, an Argentinian teammate laughed that Mexico’s version of “Happy Birthday” lasts much longer. The laugh turned into a quick chat about regional norms and customs, which got them talking about how they can design better products for customers from all backgrounds and experiences.
For Emiliano, these in-person rituals—coffee chats or a teammate bringing hometown treats—build trust and make working on tech together a fresh and exciting experience because those conversations surface perspectives and ideas he’d miss working alone. They help the team catch blind spots early, choose clearer language and design features that help millions of Capital One customers.
Coming home with purpose
Emiliano grew up in Mexico City but left to study in Monterrey. He hadn’t planned to return until Capital One offered him this role with opportunity for growth.
"I’m very grateful,” he said. “I got to move back to my home city and reconnect with my family after almost five years. My dad even drives me to work some mornings. We get to talk on the way, which is something we hadn’t done in years.”
It’s not lost on Emiliano how full-circle this all feels. His dad, who inspired his love of tech, now sees him working as an engineer with a top-tier tech stack, and he’s impressed by the scale and impact of his son’s work.

More than just a day job
For Emiliano, Capital One is opening doors beyond engineering. He loves the ability to participate in mentorship and internal hackathons, and he’s excited to jump into one of the volunteer projects through Capital One’s Pro Bono program—helping small nonprofits and businesses solve complex tech problems so they can better serve their communities. “You’re making a difference through your everyday work,” he said, “and you also feel like you’re part of something bigger.”
Judith Gonzalez, Capital One Mexico’s country manager, said something that stuck with him in his early days after joining: “She told us that Capital One’s presence in Mexico City matters not just for us, but for Mexico,” he said. “If we succeed, it shows other companies they can build tech careers here, too.”
