ROLE OVERVIEW

The Director, Business Risk and Governance (Regulatory Lead) supporting the Commercial Underwriting and Portfolio Management (UW&PM) organization will be an experienced leader, possessing deep regulatory expertise and extensive experience in advising management on commercial credit matters. Candidates should have the self-confidence, intellectual horsepower, and earned credibility requisite to effectively lead and enhance governance and remediation activities across the commercial underwriting and portfolio management activities of Capital One’s Commercial Bank.

The Director must have strong communication and relationship building skills for interactions with internal and external stakeholders.  These stakeholders include the UW&PM senior leadership team, Commercial Risk, Credit Review, Internal Audit, Credit Officers and business unit leaders as well as external regulators (e.g. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and Federal Reserve Bank staff).  It will be critical that the candidate build credibility across this wide array of constituents.  This individual will combine a hands-on, detail-orientation with a strategic mindset and innate capacity to consult with and influence senior leaders as they address pressing regulatory and business issues. 

Functional responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the business unit’s resident expert on regulatory matters surrounding a variety of commercial credit topics including risk ratings, evaluation and adjudication of credits, shared national credits, leveraged lending

  • Stay current on regulatory expectations and keep the business unit informed of anticipated regulatory actions or shifts in tone and expectations.

  • Work with Commercial Risk, Credit Review, and Regulatory Relations teams to create a strategy to address key changes within the business unit.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on critical changes pertaining to regulatory reporting and helping in the organization (in collaboration with our regulatory reporting teams) to drive conformance to related requirements.

  • Ensure the Commercial UW&PM business unit’s processes and governance routines are consistently in conformance with regulatory and enterprise expectations.  

  • Work with the business unit to ensure all regulatory documentation requirements are met, and that Credit Review, regulatory exam results are positive. 

  • Establish a clear framework around how to evaluate transactions through the eyes of Credit Review and/or regulatory counterparts. 

  • Work regularly with the various UW&PM teams at the transaction level as their go-to, in-business counsel.

  • Help maintain sound, compliant and appropriate solutions to complex regulatory matters, including leading the UW&PM organization’s regulatory agenda - which includes a combination of recurring routines as well as targeted regulatory reviews. 

  • Work with Commercial Risk, Regulatory Relations, Credit Review and Audit teams to respond to and remediate escalated findings in an efficient, effective and sustainable manner.

  • Serve as a liaison between the UW&PM organization and the broader Commercial Fraud organization, which includes staying abreast of emerging issues and helping identify any potential risk management opportunities in that space.

  • Manage multiple, complex initiatives simultaneously and leverage project management and planning skills with a forward-thinking approach.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or military experience 

  • At least 8 years of experience within a regulatory body such as the Office of the Controller of the Currency, Federal Reserve Bank or a regulatory advisory role at a commercial bank 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • At least 10 years of experience in a regulatory role within the commercial banking industry

  • Experience across lending products including cash flow lending, real estate lending or structured products 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Charlotte, NC: $187,300 - $213,700 for Director, Risk Management


McLean, VA: $206,000 - $235,100 for Director, Risk Management


Richmond, VA: $187,300 - $213,700 for Director, Risk Management









Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
