Capital One is seeking a Senior Director of Software Engineering to lead, manage, mentor, and grow an extremely talented software engineering team to build exciting software solutions within the Enterprise. This leader must have the ability to attract and recruit the industry’s best talent, and simultaneously have the technical chops to ensure we invest in the right solutions on behalf of our engineering teams and customers. Success in the role requires an innovative mind, a proven track record of delivering resilient systems, a keen eye towards managing risk, and a passion for tackling complex software problems in a horizontal capacity on behalf of millions of customers. 

As a Senior Director, Software Engineering on Capital One’s AI Developer Experience team, you will own and execute on high priority AI enterprise level initiatives, influence across the enterprise, and drive the implementation of our AI Developer Experience strategy. Specifically, you will be partnering closely with cross-functional teams, mentor engineers and provide technical guidance to teams to design, architect, develop and deploy AI powered tools to improve developer experiences across the enterprise. This role will be responsible for big picture thinking, strategic direction, presenting to executive stakeholders, and holding engineering teams accountable for overarching delivery goals.

You thrive in working in a fast paced, technologically forward-leaning environment and are not afraid to push the boundaries. You'll bring solid experience in emerging and traditional technologies such as: Java, GO, Python, Spark, REST, NoSQL databases, Relational databases, Memory Grids, Containers, Serverless, Machine Learning/AI and AWS/Cloud Infrastructure to name a few.

You will:

  • Lead, manage and grow multiple teams of product focused software engineers

  • Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of engineers on your team

  • Work with product leaders to define the strategy, roadmap and destination architecture

  • Manage a portfolio of diverse technology platforms and projects to build scalable applications that meet our customer needs

  • Continuously improve software engineering practices

  • Work within and across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across a full-stack of development tools and technologies

  • Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of your solutions

  • Bring a passion to stay on top of tech trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal & external technology communities, and mentor other members of the engineering community

  • Encourage innovation, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, inclusion, outside-of-the-box   thinking, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • At least 9 years experience in software engineering or software development 

  • At least 7 years experience in people management

  • At least 5 years of experience with AI development tools

  • At least 5 years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D

  • 10+ years of experience in software development

  • 7+ years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)

  • 7+ years of experience in Agile practices

  • 7+ years of experience in AI framework libraries (TensorFlow, Pytorch, scikit-learn) and AI tooling platforms

  • 5+ years of experience in open source frameworks

  • 5+ years of experience with developing and implementing target architectures

  • 5+ years of experience in Agile practices

  • 5+ year of experience with distributed systems

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $308,700 - $352,300 for Sr. Dir, Software Engineering


New York, NY: $336,700 - $384,200 for Sr. Dir, Software Engineering


Plano, TX: $280,600 - $320,200 for Sr. Dir, Software Engineering


Richmond, VA: $280,600 - $320,200 for Sr. Dir, Software Engineering








Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
