Our Global Tax team is seeking a Senior Tax Manager who will be primarily responsible for managing sales and use tax research and planning for Capital One. This newly created role will serve as the technical tax advisor for Capital One Travel and other business units on sales and use tax issues relating to new and existing products and purchasing activities, as well as actively supporting sales and use tax reporting, inquiries and audits.
In this role, you will be an integral member of our Tax team who will be interacting and partnering with Capital One Travel, other business units, procurement, accounting, finance and legal functions to manage tax risk, ensure accurate compliance with sales and use tax laws, and support corporate-wide initiatives. This role also will be responsible for optimizing the sales and use tax technology applications and enhancing the filing process.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with the ability to execute across diverse lines of an expanding organization. A successful candidate will have strong communication skills, a well-rounded tax background, attention to details and a desire for problem solving in a non-routine, dynamic environment. This role will travel to other company sites and tax conferences, as needed.
Responsibilities:
Partner with Capital One Travel and other business lines as applicable to address indirect tax issues regarding collecting and remitting tax on various products and identify opportunities to reduce indirect tax burden
Serve as technical tax resource for Capital One on US indirect tax issues, including researching tax laws on a variety of indirect tax matters including experience related to the online travel industry
Work closely with business units, finance and procurement functions to coordinate data collection, review calculations, and ensure timely and accurate tax reporting
Partner with the Tax Controversy team to manage indirect tax audits initiated by states and localities
Coordinate with indirect tax compliance team to ensure timely and accurate filing of sales and use tax returns, including making payments in a timely and accurate manner, in compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations
Advise the sales and use tax compliance team regarding monthly reconciliation of sales and use tax accounts and ensure proper documentation is maintained to support tax filings and audits
Track legislative and regulatory changes in indirect tax, actively participate in industry forums, assess and implement changes for accurate tax reporting, and communicate applicability and impact of these changes to key stakeholders, including business units, in a timely and clear manner
Review monthly sales & use tax journal entries
Identify and implement process improvements and automation solutions for data collection, sales and use tax calculations and sales and use tax reporting
Maintain and update taxability matrices for all services and products
Coordinate with internal and external partners to review contracts impacting various indirect taxes
An ideal candidate will possess:
Strong technical knowledge of state and local sales and use tax laws, regulations, and administrative rules
Analytical and problem-solving skills, including ability to identify risk, research and resolve tax issues, identify tax savings and refund opportunities, and work strategically with the key lines of business
Written and verbal communication skills with ability to present technical matters to other team members and applicable business units and stakeholders in a manner appropriate for the audience
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or military experience
At least 7 years of tax experience in an accounting firm, or public company or law firm or a combination
Preferred Qualifications:
10+ years of tax experience in an accounting firm, or public company or law firm or a combination
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification or Masters in Science (MS) in Tax
6+ years of indirect tax experience, including experience in the travel industry and addressing hotel, accommodations and lodging taxes
Experience researching sales and use tax laws and advising companies on the impacts of those laws and regulations
Direct experience with sales & use tax reporting and payment engines (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, TR One Source)
Experience with invoicing and accounts receivable systems for indirect tax collection
Direct experience with the testing and implementation of a sales & use tax reporting and payment engine
Experience with Alteryx or other data automation products
Microsoft Suite or Google Suite skills

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $177,700 - $202,800 for Sr. Manager, TaxCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
