7 resume tips for students and recent grads

Fine-tuning a resume can be difficult when you’re still early in your career. As a college student or recent grad, you have one chance to show a complete stranger everything you’ve accomplished, while also showing off your motivations and how you approach work.

Check out our Students & Grads recruiters' seven tips to capture it all and help your resume stand out.

Resume Tip 1: Keep resume to one page. Recruiters look at it for about six seconds. They need to find important information quickly.
Resume Tip 2: List education first. Putting your school, major and graduation date at the top will help recruiters decode which programs best match your skill set and where you can start.
Resume Tip 3: Make things tidy. List experience in chronological order and have separate sections for extracurriculars like volunteering. It can be confusing if you list all these activities in one place.
Resume Tip 4: Tailor your resume. Put the experiences most relevant to the job or internship higher on the page.
Resume Tip 5: Share key results. Show how you've achieved goals in your experiences with descriptions, ranges or scales. Don't just list your job description.
Resume Tip 6: Use action keywords. Start sentences with verbs to take your descriptions to the next level.
Resume Tip 7: Save as a PDF. This guarantees your resume format will look the same on different computers.
