Michael Wassmer Innovation Center: Uplifting our community

Innovation isn't always a "shiny object"—often, it’s found in the quiet exchange of knowledge that helps a small business thrive. At Capital One’s Michael Wassmer Innovation Center, associates leverage their professional expertise to partner with local entrepreneurs and organizations to build a better Richmond. 

By acting as skills-based volunteers, associates guide community members through complex business challenges, contributing thousands of hours to local startups and nonprofits. This support ranges from creative consultations on social media strategy and interior design for local restaurants to dedicated legal pro bono clinics.

Since its opening, the center has fueled Capital One’s Impact Initiative, our commitment to create a world where everyone has an equal opportunity to prosper.

Using expertise to elevate the community

Tasha, a senior manager for the Associate Relations team, is a prime example of how specific professional skills can create long-term stability for small businesses. Through “Grow @ 1717,” a 12-week program that helps local organizations build capacity, Tasha provided small-business owners with a crash course in human resources.

She helped these partners establish best practices for benefits, employee relations, and payroll—the foundational elements that allow a business to scale and support its employees.

“I’ve seen plenty of small mom-and-pop businesses close,” Tasha said. “I wanted to do my part to help more local stores, restaurants, and organizations be successful. It’s all part of how I can aid in our mission to support the communities where we live and work.”

Finding the flexibility to give back

The Michael Wassmer Innovation Center is just one way associates can give back. From serving on boards to conducting virtual resume reviews, we provide a wide range of opportunities and the flexibility for associates to choose when and how they volunteer.

For Tasha, this flexibility is essential. In addition to her role at Capital One, she is raising two children and completing graduate school. The ability to find a path to helping others that fits into a demanding personal schedule is a cornerstone of the culture.

“Capital One’s culture ensures we can maximize our time however we see fit,” Tasha said. “The ability to build your own journey here includes finding your path to helping others.”
