Design Strategy Lead (XD Tools)

Within Capital One’s design team, the Experience Strategy group seeks a Design Tools Strategy Lead to take on the challenging work of providing our designers with the tools and training to do their best work. 

Experience Strategy is a small, horizontal team of about 30 designers who serve our broader design team of more than 600+ associates working across all parts of Capital One’s business. Our mission is to define and drive universal practices in service of advancing our maturity as a design organization and empowering our teams to deliver their best work.

As our Tools Strategy Lead in Capital One’s Experience Design organization you will use your design expertise to help identify capability gaps in our current tool stack, coordinate with stakeholders from our design and brand organizations, and look outward at potential new vendors and tool requirements emerging in the industry.

What You’ll Do: 

You’ll be asked to handle a variety of responsibilities, including: 

Strategy & Planning

  • Engaging in portfolio prioritization and guiding the tools strategy for the Experience Design organization

  • Managing through shifting priorities to provide clear direction and input 

  • Advocating for our customers (Experience Designers and Senior Leadership) through human-centered design methods, ensuring strategy addresses their needs

  • Embracing and advocating for an experience mindset - this is as important to the work as the results

Discovery & Delivery

  • Identify potential capability gaps in our current tool stack and make informed recommendations for addressing them

  • Facilitate deep dives across different design practices to gain insights into best practices

  • Document and maintain best practices for how designers use tools

  • Identify and help coordinate tool training and education for future business needs

  • Identify emerging trends in the industry combined with analysis of our current tools to inform our tool stack and future roadmap

  • Support relationships with our vendors and explore opportunities with new vendors in partnership with Experience Design Top of House, Enterprise Supplier Management, Risk, Architecture and Cyber.

Lead & Develop Teams

  • Building and leading successful teams through career development by mentoring, coaching, and elevating others

  • Guiding team members and facilitating strategy, research, alignment, and analysis

  • Navigating conflict resolution within your team as well as within projects, teams and partner relationships 

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of experience in a tools technology or a design role such as Design Management, Design Strategy, Research, or UX/UI design

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise with design tools across for Design Management, Design Strategy, Research, and UX/UI design

  • 3+ years of experience in a horizontal role supporting internal teams

  • Comfortable collaborating with Product and Tech partners and building external vendor relationships

  • Experience managing multiple programs of work

  • Familiarity with agile principles, project management methodologies and tools
