Small Business Underwriting Team Lead

Summary:

The SBB Underwriting Team Leads will be part of a team of leaders that are  responsible for overseeing the underwriting and credit approval process in regard to small business loans and direct the underwriters assigned to their team in their role of analyzing, assessing and mitigating risks on new loan proposals as well as existing loans. This leader will  be responsible for training new underwriters, coaching existing underwriters and fostering a culture of teamwork and development.  This leader will also hold a portfolio of approximately 25 loans for which they are responsible.  

Key Responsibilities:

As an individual contributor, this leader will manage an individual loan portfolio of approximately 25 Small Business Banking credit relationships. This leader will have the following underwriting responsibilities:

  • Underwriting and approving, conditioning or declining new loan requests and renewals up to the limit of their commercial loan authority in accordance with Capital One Bank loan policy and portfolio performance objectives. Maintains up to $1,000,000 in commercial loan authority for secured and unsecured loans.

  • Underwriting and then recommending approval on loan requests that are in excess of his/her commercial loan authority. These requests are submitted to the Underwriting Team Lead or Credit Officer for final approval.

  • Ensuring appropriate application of all bank and line of business policies and procedures; supporting and driving adherence to regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Serving as thought leader in identifying and delivering improvements in our Small Business policy, underwriting, and/or risk management, driving special project work as appropriate.

  • Helping drive the department's underwriting training.

As an SBL Underwriting Team Lead, this people leader will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Leading, developing and overseeing a diverse team of Small  Business Lenders and providing feedback regarding the quality and completeness of credit approval memos, loan structure, policy knowledge, and credit scoring; and act as back up for Underwriting Managers.

  • Providing and ensuring their assigned group of underwriters provide outstanding service to business bankers and branch managers. Works with Small Business Bankers in structuring loan requests in a manner which will best mitigate lending risks while meeting borrower needs.

  • Delivering and ensuring their assigned group of underwriters delivers a great overall customer experience working closely with the Business Loan Advocates that are accountable for the end to end loan process from application to funding.

  • Partnering with SBL Leadership  to foster an environment of open dialogue around risk tolerance and credit appetite.

  • Coaching their assigned team to excellence and continual career development through regular check ins, reviewing and coaching towards improving the underwriting and risk management activities of the team.  

  • Performing annual and mid year periodic performance reviews and talent assessments of the team 

  • Maintaining portfolio quality by leading and coaching their team in the timely, consistent and correct underwriting of complex loans;  adherence to appropriate credit policy and procedures for loan approvals and portfolio management activities. 

  • Promoting appropriate application of all bank and line of business policies and procedures; supporting and driving adherence to regulatory compliance requirements

  • Overseeing the team’s Portfolio Management reviews and implementing processes, including:

    • Compliance with established monitoring standards,

    • Scheduling and conducting periodic portfolio and industry reviews,

    • Identification of emerging problems within the portfolio,

    • Identifying potential structural enhancements in order to improve the credit and reduce risk exposure.

  • Working with audit, loan review, credit policy analysis and other bank partners on issues related to  underwriting and approvals, as needed. Partnering with SBL Leaders and the Special Assets to develop strategies to manage the risk of the portfolio through loan modifications and other strategies.

  • Maintaining a strong working knowledge of the bank, its customers, loan portfolio, competitive environment, economic trends and policies.

  • Recruiting new talent to the SBL team as needed.

  • Assisting SBL Leadership with new and ongoing underwriter training

  • Staying abreast of new and emerging trends in small business credit issues and global credit/underwriting issues.

  • Informed and Connected. Staying abreast of new and emerging trends in small business credit issues and global credit/underwriting issues. Serving on industry committees and developing industry contacts as appropriate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • At least 7 years of financial services experience

  • At least 7 years of commercial or small business underwriting experience

  • At least 2 years of people leadership experience (direct or indirect)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or Master’s degree    

  • 10+ years of Commercial or Small Business Underwriting Experience
