Senior Director of Strategy & Governance - Technology Chief of Staff

The Senior Director of Strategy & Governance - Technology Chief of Staff role provides a considerable opportunity for ingenuity. We are looking for an independent thinker who makes convincing, evidence-based decisions. The ideal candidate will devise clear roadmaps to individually deliver results and is comfortable thinking strategically and diving deep; a vanguard leader who can identify opportunities and leverage the team to translate them into live solutions.

As a Senior Director of Strategy and Governance at Capital One, you will drive strategy and execute on high priority initiatives for the company in the Auto Financial Services division. Change isn’t scary for you, you love it, you embrace it and you lead others through their change curve. Roadblocks are not in your vocabulary and you will remove any that come your way.




This leader is at the heart of the Financial Services Technology organization and is  accountable for the effective development of strategies that lead to the well-managed operation of the organization. You will represent the voice of the Financial Services Technology Leadership team in various forums, partner with and influence C-level leaders and work closely with stakeholders in Risk, Cyber, Data, Engineering, Legal, HR, and Finance. 


Here are some areas where you can expect to focus your time and effort:


Strategy Development and Execution:

  • Play a key advisory role to the Divisional CIO and act as his proxy to solve a wide range of challenges and manage approvals on his behalf

  • Drawing on internal and external research, partner with the Divisional CIO and the Financial Services Technology Leadership Team to define and drive alignment on annual updates to the technology strategy as well as the supporting operations and labor strategies

  • Translate strategies into actionable programs and execute them flawlessly across multiple lines of business and engineering organizations by means of exceptional organization and influencing skills

  • Demonstrate a high degree of forward-lean, drive insights into continuous improvement opportunities and incubate new ideas 


Business Management and Governance:

  • Create and maintain well-managed operating procedures for the division including leadership meetings, monthly business reviews, quarterly business reviews, All Hands meetings, etc.

  • Ensure the department is always ready to meet regulatory and audit requirements including preparing for quarterly Examiner reviews and managing audits as well as maintaining ongoing documentation of the department’s well-managed processes

  • Produce metrics and reports to reinforce the organization’s well-managed agenda including Scorecards, Dashboards, Key Performance Indicators, and Organization Charts 

  • Know which are the most important actions for leadership to take and follow-up to ensure timely and accurate resolution


Advocate for and Demonstrate Strong Leadership:

  • Instill a sense of purpose and empowerment with employees across the organization by partnering with HR on Talent Management and Associate Satisfaction programs

  • Build a brand both internally and externally for the Financial Services Technology organization through a comprehensive communications strategy which will include preparing content as well as coaching leaders to deliver messages with impact 

  • Set the example in attracting the talent of the future by participating in campus and professional recruiting activities and creating the structure for department participation in recruiting 

  • Demonstrate the ability to lead large scale change initiatives from a programmatic as well as a people perspective

  • Focus on leadership and talent development to build a high performing team


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • At least 10 years of experience leading enterprise product, program or project management initiatives

  • At least 8 years of experience in developing governance and risk strategies within the technology space

  • At least 7 years of experience leading and managing teams


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree 

  • 15+ years of experience leading enterprise technology programs

  • 12+ years of experience driving technical strategies in engineering, data, risk, cyber, governance, and tech talent development 

  • 10+ years managing multiple teams

  • PMP Certification

  • Agile or Scrum Certification
