Product Manager - United Income

United Income is a financial technology company, headquartered in Washington, DC, that was recently acquired by Capital One. We combine the latest technology with time-tested wisdom to better understand the interconnectedness of our financial lives, allowing us to lower client’s taxes, boost retirement benefits, and improve the quality of investment management.

I am looking for a product person who can lead teams to build impactful products that solve user problems and meet our business objectives of increasing assets under management, improving our process automation, building our B2C on-boarding process, and maintaining our pace of innovation.

In this role you will be responsible for three or four epics in various stages of development: an in-flight project that is being actively developed by a dedicated engineering team; a near-term project for which your team is defining the user experience, technical requirements, and methodological work; and longer-term functionality for which you are identifying business problems, leveraging stakeholder expertise, and conducting research to turn a strategic direction into an executable idea that will have a direct impact on United Income’s business.

Each epic has a clear problem that we are trying to solve, an associated Kanban list of stories or work-to-be-done, and a definition of success.

Your job includes gathering requirements; coordinating subject matter experts; performing competitive and market research to inform the building of the next project; writing and managing user stories; running kick-offs, scrums, and planning sessions; managing the build, internal training, marketing, and launch of the current project; and measuring and reporting of the success of the previous project and its marketing; all in coordination with the overall strategic vision of the company.

If that sounds like a lot, it is. This is a senior role with significant responsibility and incredible opportunity. We want you to not only run but also shape and improve our product processes.

You must have proven experience leading a team of talented UXers, designers, and engineers to solve well-defined problems while building and maintaining enthusiasm, velocity, and focus throughout the process.

But let’s be clear: this is not a role for someone who is interested in leaving the day-to-day work of a product manager behind. There will be grunt work to be done, and not everything you are asked to do will fall into the category of “super-exciting.”

There will be charts, and PowerPoints, and Jira stories aplenty to go along with your business case creation, strategic analysis, and team coordination. You will be your own scrum master. You will be expected to do light data analysis, creating and maintaining detailed metrics reports that will be presented to the head of Product, head of Engineering, our SVP, and beyond.

I need you to come ready to take ownership of your projects; learn our organization, culture, and goals; and apply your expertise to making our product team better.


In this role, you will:

  • Lead a team of UXers, designers, and engineers;

  • Take ownership of projects in various stages of readiness and create an executable roadmap of product work;

  • Run kick-offs, scrums, and planning sessions;

  • Perform competitive and market research to inform the building of the next project and identify strategic opportunities;

  • Manage the build, internal training, marketing, and launch of the current project;

  • Measure and report on the success of the previous project and its marketing

  • Build buy-in and consensus among stakeholders while proactively managing scope;

  • Support the Wealth Management and Marketing teams; and

  • Work with the head of Product on special projects as they come up.


The ideal candidate…

  • Is ready to roll-up their sleeves and do the detail work necessary to support their projects and the company’s strategic goals;

  • Combines enthusiasm, pragmatism, optimism, and expertise to rally teams to accomplish well-defined goals;

  • Balances business goals and user needs; and

  • Uses metrics and analytics to define product success and user impact.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

  • 3+ years of product management experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience and a track-record of delivering impactful solutions (applicants with fewer than the minimum three years of explicit product management experience should submit a cover letter explaining their qualifications to avoid being overlooked);

  • Experience in the financial technology space and its associated regulations;

  • A well-defined track record of releasing successful product on a frequent basis;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to clearly articulate findings and concepts that support the problem you are trying to solve; and

  • Fluency with Jira and Confluence.


It’s a huge plus if you also have:

  • Knowledge of financial products and their associated regulations;

  • Experience building product for older audiences (47 to 70 years old);

  • Experience crafting messaging around functionality launches; and

  • Data analysis experience, including creating and running SQL queries.
