External Affairs works with many external and internal stakeholders to envision and create a world of greater socioeconomic opportunity through advocating for an inclusive society, building thriving communities, and creating financial tools that enrich lives. Our teams include Communications, Community Impact and Investment, Community Finance, CRA Strategy and Program Management, the Government and Political Affairs Group, Regulatory Relations, and Strategy and Engagement. This associate on the External Affairs Strategy and Engagement team will lead and collaborate on substantive and significant projects and activities to deliver value. The associate’s work will involve a range of both core and expanded social impact strategy and themes, including but not limited to inclusive growth as a concept, an expanding and modernized view of financial inclusion, supporting regenerative and sustainable environmental innovation in our communities, and additional focus on racial equity and DIB as holistic impact opportunities.
The work will be diverse and wide-ranging, but focused on providing material support to the mission, identity, and strategic goals of the enterprise. It won’t be easy and the bar is high, but the impact of success will be real. Let’s get started.
Opportunity Identification and Leadership:
Elevate the business value of strong social impact strategy, leveraging an integrated approach to making the case for bold but simultaneously well managed opportunities to “make a difference”
Alongside both business and community stakeholders, collaboratively identify the “new frontiers” of social impact and related expectations in a rapidly changing external and internal environment
Collaboratively explore options for expanding our impact ecosystem through enhancing existing key stakeholder relationships, developing new and novel impact partnerships, and amplifying magnetic social impact stories
Ensure that Capital One is aware of emerging opportunities in key social impact areas, including but not limited to racial equity, end-to-end ESG, and shared value
Leveraging a 360 view and quantitative and qualitative data in particular, prioritize of the frontiers and related projects for maximum impact
Connect existing bodies of work in areas such as affordable housing, small business support, and education equity to each other and to new work to ensure maximum impact
Leverage best practice benchmarking, external and internal data, networking, and thought leadership to illuminate multi-year opportunities for internal stakeholders to work together toward shared positive outcomes
Operate collaboratively with both EA and enterprise partners to integrate findings into both existing and new bodies of work on an ongoing basis
Serve as a member of an impact-focused internal consulting function for both specifically requested and ongoing collaboration with LOBs, corporate functions, and BRGs supporting mission-aligned social impact opportunities
Elevate and integrate Board and senior leadership social impact priorities throughout the broader strategic internal consulting agenda
Ensure that elevation of opportunities to respond to the needs of historically underserved communities is a principal component of our value proposition and our delivery in the widest breadth of engagements possible
Appropriately incorporate and collaborate with subject matter experts from across External Affairs to ensure that our internal partners have the full support of EA in envisioning and delivering against their impact opportunities
Engage with subject matter experts across the enterprise to ensure that counsel is thoughtful and actionable
Increase enterprise fluency and facility with data informed and driven social impact strategy and impact evaluation
Develop and expand mutually beneficial relationships with a wide array of partners in support of expanding enterprise social impact
Elevate strategic and day to day working relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups to operate for impact against our enterprise social impact priorities
Continuously build and improve collaborative relationships with teams and stakeholders built on planning, communication, shared wins, and real outcomes
Motivate a broad array of internal partners to collaborate with External Affairs in demonstrating Capital One’s corporate identity and mission orientation to both associates and external communities
In collaboration with LOB, corporate function, and BRG partners, ensure enterprise associate awareness, and whenever possible, participation in our work
Across all work, Capture and share the most relevant associate perspectives with stakeholders wherever and whenever possible
Engage widely to champion the value and excitement of social impact focused career opportunities and transitions
Assist in identifying, recruiting, supporting, developing, and mentoring the next generation of diverse leaders eager for careers dedicated to impact
Increase broad awareness of and celebrate the career interests, talents, and great work of your fellow associates
Maintain meaningful engagement with a wide range of associates and broader professionals motivated by and dedicated to a shared vision of a better future
As needed, offer other ad-hoc consulting or operational support to major projects or organizational needs/opportunities
At least 4 years of experience in strategy consulting or at least 4 years of experience in advising internal or external clients, or any combination of the two
At least 4 years of experience in creating presentations for multiple types and levels of audiences
At least 2 years of work related social impact, racial equity, ESG, shared value, or corporate social responsibility, or any combination thereof
At least 3 years of volunteer work
At least 2 years of work with political, media, or regulatory stakeholders, or any combination of the three
At least 1 year of non-profit Board service
At least 1 year of experience working at a non-profit
At least 1 year of people leadership experience
