Senior Director, Climate Scenario Analysis

At Capital One, we dare to dream, disrupt and deliver a better way. Our goal is simple — bring ingenuity, simplicity and humanity to an industry ripe for change. Our associates are the heart of Capital One and our commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging (DIB) are valued at our core. We empower our associates to do great work by creating an inclusive culture that values diverse perspectives, fosters collaboration, and encourages innovative ideas. A workplace where everyone feels safe, seen, heard, valued and able to bring their best, most authentic selves to work.

Climate related risk is an emerging topic of increased focus across the banking industry, garnering substantial interest from investors, regulators, and the public.  A new team has been formed within Capital One’s Enterprise Risk Management functions to take on the work of integrating climate risk management into our broader risk management and governance framework.  To support this week, we are seeking a leader for a new Climate Scenario Analysis team.  This team’s mission is to leverage risk identification and scenario analysis best practices to identify and assess the impact of key climate-related transition and physical risks over the short, medium, and long term time horizons.

The Senior Director, Head of Climate Scenario Analysis will report to the Managing Vice President, Enterprise Risk Management.  This individual will be accountable for developing, implementing, and managing Capital One’s climate scenario analysis capabilities.  While this new process will leverage the firm’s existing risk management frameworks, risk identification processes, scenario analysis capabilities, and credit analytics, it will also require the introduction of new governance, scenario design processes, data, models, and skills across the Lines of Defense. This role will require the individual to build and manage a team (including direct resources and 3rd parties) to drive both the design and implementation of the scenario analysis process, as well as the management of ongoing analysis and reporting.

The ideal candidate for this role will have strong analytical skills and experience, and an in-depth understanding of risk identification, scenario analysis, and stress testing frameworks and processes.  Ideally, this experience will have been gained through experience building and/or managing one or more of these processes.  Additionally, this candidate will possess significant leadership experience, including leadership of direct teams, program delivery, and influence/collaboration with multiple stakeholders across the organization.  Ideally, the candidate will also have experience with climate risk identification and analysis in the financial services sector.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Drive a cross-functional effort to develop and implement Climate risk scenario analysis capabilities across the firm

  • Deliver periodic portfolio-level periodic climate scenario analyses

  • Ensure appropriate governance, oversight, and effective challenge of scenario analysis

  • Develop and operate appropriate scenario design processes

  • Develop reporting on the outcomes of scenario analysis to a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, Board, and regulators

  • Support climate risk content for external disclosures (e.g., 10-K, Climate disclosures)

  • A proven track record partnering across diverse stakeholder groups

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, with the ability to synthesize complex concepts into consumable insights

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of risk management experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in analysis

  • Working knowledge of risk regulatory and industry external frameworks, particularly in credit climate risk such as Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) scenarios, European regulatory guidance, Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD)

  • At least 5 years of experience leading complex programs, projects, or initiatives across an organization

  • At least 5 years of experience in people management

  • At least 5 years of experience in financial services / banking
