About the Role:

Capital One is looking for an experienced and results-driven public relations professional to join a growing team of experts on our Public Affairs and Media Relations team. The Public Affairs Principal Associate will serve as part of the broader Corporate Reputation & Insight team, which manages external enterprise communications and works in close partnership with the company’s External Affairs group on policy advocacy, issues and crisis management, and strengthening the company’s reputation. 

This position reports to the co-lead of Public Affairs & Media Relations for Capital One. The hired associate will build and strengthen Capital One’s legacy Public Affairs function while managing a multifaceted portfolio that balances proactive campaign design and execution with rapid response and issues management. 

Responsibilities:

  • Public Affairs:Work with extended teams and subject matter experts to support public and influence communications campaigns related to policy, legal, and rapidly evolving regulatory matters. As part of broader product and policy teams, the scope of this role may include topics such as antitrust, privacy, security, and Environmental Social & Governance (ESG) topics.

  • Issues and Crisis Management:Design and support issues and crisis management planning and support delivery that mitigates risk and protects / bolsters Capital One’s reputation. 

  • Media Relations: Actively engage members of the media to help inform media coverage of Capital One and our priority issues. Conduct media training and prepare spokespeople for interviews.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Develop and maintain fluency in relevant external trends and policy issues impacting the business and its peers, which may include Privacy and relevant Environmental, Social, and Governance topics. Integrate relevant data and analytics into programmatic recommendations that inform business approach and policy leaders. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree OR military experience.

  • At least three years of experience implementing communications programs. 

  • At least three years of experience building relationships with media members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in public relations, public affairs, or communications within any combination of large corporations, government entities, trade organizations, or a communications agency.

  • At least one year of communications experience within organizations operating in regulated industries. 

  • At least one year of experience developing data-driven multi-channel communications plans leveraging Paid, Earned, Social & Owned (PESO) models, with measurable short and long-term goals.

  • Demonstrable media relations experience and established reporter relationships within business, local market, and financial or technology trade media.

  • Skilled writer and spoken communicator, a strategic thinker, and in possession of superior judgment and organizational skills

  • Familiarity with decisionmaker audiences that shape and inform financial services debate, which may include relevant elected officials, regulatory agencies, community activists, think tanks or influencers, and an understanding of best practices for informing stakeholder perspectives. 

  • Background in the financial services and/or tech industries.
