Senior Director, Software Engineering

As Senior Director, Software Engineering for Capital One Shopping, you will be a senior leader of a standalone business that draws support from Capital One’s massive customer franchise and leading technology platform.  Your team of 50+ software engineers and architects are dreamers, disruptors, and doers that have a blend of high-growth startup and FinTech experience.  The Shopping platform is 100% insourced and everything is built and maintained in the public cloud. In this role, you will have the opportunity to shape the strategy and roadmap to bring our high-growth vision into reality. As an engineering leader at Capital One, you will also be able to attract and motivate world class engineers to a technological and cultural vision. You will be enthusiastic about deeply understanding the business, and excellent at building cross functional partnerships in a large organization.

The Person

You are a seasoned engineering leader with a proven track record scaling early-stage high-growth digital businesses. You have expertise in digital marketing, online retail, FinTech, and have a passion for creating exceptional customer experiences. You have managed fast-growing and highly skilled engineers that care as much about the customer as the software that delivers the experience. You have worked in fast-paced environments that ship code daily to delight the customer and to inform solution development.  You have a proven track record of identifying, recruiting and developing top technical talent. You have the proven ability to influence and collaborate with internal and external partners to drive change within larger enterprises. You have a demonstrated ability to develop a vision, drive, and manage the execution of that vision, and deliver top-tier results. You exhibit excellent leadership skills to leverage the capabilities of peers, business partners, and associates, and possess the confidence and poise to influence the leadership team and various internal stakeholders.

Specific candidate competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Exceptional leadership skills marked by poise, positive influence, and the ability to drive change

  • Results orientation: ability to remove obstacles and hold people accountable for achieving challenging business results

  • Intellectually curious: interested in understanding and experimenting with new leading-edge technologies

  • Ability to establish credibility with, as well as motivate and mentor, highly technical engineers

  • Demonstrated ability to employ judgment and experience to make rapid and complex decisions

  • Highly developed interpersonal, presentation, and communications skills (written and oral)

  • A management style that is collaborative, energetic, results-oriented, and innovative

  • Strong team builder and leader: well-honed coaching skills with the ability and a passion to create an inclusive environment

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • At least 9 years of experience in software engineering

  • At least 5 years of experience in people management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Business Administration

  • Affiliate marketing experience

  • 10+ years’ of experience in software development

  • 7+ years’ of experience in Agile practices

  • 3+ years of experience in a cloud environment
