Bethesda Metro Center (17049), United States of America, Bethesda, MarylandCommercial Real Estate, Senior Underwriter Manager - Small LoansThe incumbent is responsible for serving as a player/coach underwriting leader overseeing an underwriting team for Capital One’s Multifamily platform, specifically for Government Sponsored Entities (i.e. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etc.). This role will be focused on Capital One’s small loan business including small Fannie Mae Conventional and Ch. 9 Small Loans, and Freddie Mac SBL, which includes presenting transactions for loan application and approval. This role presents an opportunity to partner with Capital One’s Small Loan leadership by facilitating product expansion, team training and development, process improvements, transactional problem-solving and relationship building with agency counterparts.
Responsibilities:
- Fully understands the procedural aspect of underwriting Agency Loans from application to delivery and can accurately detail this out to stakeholders within the deal team
- Correctly identifies all waivers/exceptions and risks associated with the transactions and provides mitigated recommendation
- Navigates and takes deal ownership through the underwriting process with an eye toward the customer experience, partnering with originators, relationship managers or other production sources, and agency counterparts while maintaining attention to detail, proposing sound solutions to deal concerns, and employing effective risk management
- Field questions, review work, and provide deal guidance with Junior Underwriting Managers, Underwriters, Analysts and Production through the underwriting process and prior to approval
- Underwrite transactions while leading and leveraging a team to enhance transactional underwriting efficiency
- Mentor and train underwriting team
- Utilize organizational skills to effectively manage portfolio underwriting and contract underwriters
- Interprets Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac product sheets, underwriting parameters and underwrites all transaction types, including fixed, floating, supplementals, MHC's, credit facilities, etc.
- Higher level external exposure to brokers, borrowers, lender counsel, and agency counterparts
- Ability to underwrite complex transactions with simple to complicated borrower structures and unique property or market characteristics
- Effectively manages and models appropriate written and verbal communication with borrowers at various levels of sophistication, agency counterparts and the deal team.
- Structure and underwrite small loan products in a manner which achieves the Bank’s profitability goals while staying within the Bank’s risk parameters.
- Review underwriter loan approval presentations for approval, submit recommendations and/or approve.
- Develops and foster relationships with agency counterparts
- Presents ideas for policy and process improvements to their manager
- Understand and employ all policies and procedures of the Bank and the Line of Business.
- Partner with Closing and lender counsel in the review and approval of loan documentation to ensure the documents meet agreed-upon business terms and satisfy the specific requirements of the appropriate credit approval authority.
- Foster an open dialogue and strong working relationship with Asset Management, Servicing, and Closing, and other groups that support and review the line of business.
- Remain current on all bank compliance regulatory policies and procedures and on all pending and proposed regulatory changes affecting bank compliance.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or Military Experience
- At least 5 years of experience in Multifamily Agency lending and underwriting
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 7 years of experience in Multifamily Agency Lending
- At least 7 years of experience in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Multifamily underwriting
- At least 3 years of experience in SBL Multifamily underwriting
- At least 5 years of experience managing a team of three or more
