Senior Director, Community Impact and Investment

Comprised of seven collaborative teams, External Affairs is committed to socioeconomic mobility -- a reinvigorated call to action to collaboratively dream with associates across Capital One about how to ideate, innovate, and operate to elevate the good in a rapidly evolving global environment. 

Our teams include Communications, Community Impact and Investment, Community Finance, CRA Strategy and Program Management, the Government and Political Affairs Group, Regulatory Relations, and Strategy and Engagement.  Through our teams, we have unparalleled access to a diverse group of motivated changemakers similarly focused on the ingredients for a more perfect future.

The Community Impact and Investment team works with many external and internal stakeholders to envision and create a world of greater socioeconomic opportunity through advocating for an inclusive society, building thriving communities, and creating financial tools that enrich financial health.  We partner with the enterprise to engage for real progress on challenging systemic barriers our customers and communities face in both achieving their dreams and managing their daily lives.

Our team’s responsibilities and opportunities include, but are not limited to: leading and managing a robust volunteerism strategy with increasing focus on scale and structured pro-bono and non-profit Board service opportunities; strategic guidance and operational management of a five year, $200 million philanthropic commitment to the communities we serve; maintaining strong and substantive relationships with our community partners, including Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs); and leveraging community-informed guidance to consult broader Capital One on critical issues such as financial inclusion, racial equity, and supporting structurally and historically underserved communities in new and novel ways.

Customer and Results Focus

  • Lead emphasizing a balance dreaming and delivering, ensuring that your team and fellow associates have the support they need to do both well

  • Identify customer(s) for a project at the outset to ensure alignment with broader priorities and resourcing decisions

  • Ensure a results-forward orientation to all planning, especially related to projects which have strong connectivity to other areas of External Affairs and the enterprise

  • Establish, collaboratively, a set of goals, KPIs, and evaluation metrics for your major responsibilities to be tracked and communicated throughout the lifetime of those responsibilities

  • Seek and incorporate data as information, exploration, inspiration, and revelation

  • Seek and incorporate stakeholder and customer feedback throughout the lifecycle of key projects and initiatives -- as well as related to broader bodies of work

  • Engage stakeholders early, and as necessary, often to prevent avoidable misses on impact

  • Involve and strengthen the community of Capital One associates energized by work to continuously improve how we serve under-resourced groups and communities

  • Consult and, as appropriate, involve a broad group of relevant stakeholders in major decisions related to the strategy and operational priorities involved in your responsibilities

  • Develop working relationships with associates across External Affairs and the enterprise who can provide meaningful and additive context and contributions to your work

  • Provide support and feedback to a wide array of stakeholders whose impact can grow with your help and counsel

 Communication

  • Utilize inclusive communication practices to ensure all audiences are served by and welcomed into discussions and dialogues

  • Maintain healthy and open lines of communication with a wide group of associates and, as needed, broader stakeholders

  • Provide important context, information, and counsel related to your responsibilities and subject matter expertise to a wide array of interested associates on a regular basis

  • Provide regular and well-rounded updates on projects and initiatives to all impacted stakeholders, including customers and team-members

Influence

  • Build mutually beneficial relationships on candor, empathy, and trust 

  • Ensure that everyone is well-informed on important opportunities and issues related to your responsibilities and areas of expertise 

  • Provide actionable guidance to associates and broader stakeholders both reactively and proactively -- but especially when something critical would be missed otherwise

  • Understand and influence the organization’s strategy and vision and support the organization’s ability to execute, innovate and deliver

Job Specific Skills

  • Demonstrate broader community, enterprise, and EA perspective in the performance of all of your regular and special project responsibilities

  • Partner with teams across External Affairs to identify and deliver on cross-functional opportunities

Judgment

  • Balance immediate concerns with the bigger picture, always identifying how decisions in one area may either positively or negatively impact outcomes in another 

  • Whenever possible, seek and use data to inform decisions, especially on time-, budget- and resource-intensive projects and initiatives

  • Seek potentially conflicting information, data, and perspectives to ensure a well rounded point of view

Problem Solving

  • Utilize a substantive and diverse set of information and inputs to evaluate options and calibrate decision-making both across your portfolio of work and specific key projects

  • Call on a community of both engaged and critical stakeholders to help create opportunities and solve challenges if and when their help will make the difference

  • When planning trickier projects and initiatives, outline several routes to success to protect against foreseeable problems compromising overall success

  • Identify and articulate challenges and work collaboratively with team members to solve them - escalating to leaders as needed

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or military experience

  • At least 2 years of people leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of people leadership experience

  • 2+ years of experience working with Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs)

  • 2+ years of work related social impact, racial equity, ESG, shared value, or corporate social responsibility, or any combination

  • 3+ years of volunteer work

  • 2+ years of work with political, media, or regulatory stakeholders, or any combination of the three

  • 1+ year of non-profit Board service

  • 1+ year of experience working at a non-profit
